The boys all kept going with me for some time, and a couple continued on with the new coach, a friend of mine with similar values who took over and built the club up with great success. Our fathers had gone to teachers’ college together in the 50s, and we enjoyed this connection, along with the fact that now the club has had only two coaches in twenty-five years.

Sometimes, passing the courts, I wonder about certain pupils and what became of them. That group of boys growing up with their single mothers would all be in their late 20s and early 30s now. I hope things turned out well for them, and that all the love showed to them by their mothers and the struggles they had to raise them have not brought any further hardships or sadness.
