Making A Baby

Perhaps we slept.

Monash IVF called the next day to tell us that only one had fertilised. My husband and I looked at each other and we looked away and we prepared ourselves.

“It only takes one,” said Dad.

They grew the embryo to three days and biopsied it, this was to check for a host of genetic issues. The biopsy came back clear. The embryo was then allowed to grow to five days. This is called a blastocyst. It is the more stable age for the embryo to be frozen.

At each stage they called and told us what was happening.

Two months later in early February 2016 they implanted the embryo, the one little embryo. We watched them place it inside my uterus on a little TV. So unbelievably tiny. Nestled into the wall of my uterus. I thought “sticky” thoughts.

“Stick there”.  “Stay”. “Please stay”.

Then we waited. They asked us not to do pregnancy tests at home. Funnily enough, I had never even contemplated that. When I think of it now, that would be natural, to want to have a peek.

I went back to the hospital and had blood taken two weeks later. They said they would call me that afternoon.

I sat on the couch with my son, watching TV, and the phone rang. I knew the nurse who spoke, and we exchanged a warm hello – and she paused and I paused – all of me paused actually.

“Well, congratulations, you are pregnant”.

And I cried.

On November 1, 2015 Katarina was born. Perfect in every way.

IVF was a complicated process, emotionally and physically. I did not believe that I could have a baby.
