Turning to Barbara, Helen asked, “Well, dear, how have you been?”
“Pretty good. Christopher … you remember my son, Christopher? He was retrenched just before lockdown, so he came to live with me. He became really cranky, demanding this and that, getting fussy about nothing in particular. I nearly went mad. Thank God for YouTube. I watched so many British comedies. Whenever Christopher complained about the time I was spending on the computer, I told him it was research, and he believed me!”
After their delicious conspiratorial titter subsided, Barbara asked, “And what about you, dear? How did you get on?”
Helen slid nearer Barbara and whispered, “We were okay, but we were getting bored with each other’s company, even after lockdowns ended. Well, you know how it is when you’ve been married to someone for thirty years.”
Barbara thought this snide reference to her husband who’d died of cancer after five years of blissful marriage was a little unnecessary. And was she actually smirking? No, grinning. Her next remark clarified that.
“Fortunately, we were blessed recently with a small scandal that’s kept us amused for weeks.”
Barbara’s eyes widened in anticipation. Helen moved nearer to her.
